The U.S. national tour of Annie will stop at the WVU Creative Arts Center Saturday, May 6, for one show at 2 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Friday (Dec. 9) at 10 a.m. at the Mountainlair and CAC box offices, and online at Ticketmaster.com.
Annie, the red-headed orphan full of optimism and charm, has delighted audiences for nearly 100 years. The Little Orphan Annie comic strip, created by cartoonist Harold Gray, first appeared in the pages of the Daily News in August 1924. Annie became a Broadway musical in 1977, and chronicles Annie’s journey from the orphanage to the home of Oliver Warbucks. It is this version, with its message of resilience in the face of adversity and its “the sun will come out” idealism, that is, perhaps, the most lasting and beloved carnation of this classic character.
The U.S. national tour is directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin and is a brand-new incarnation of the iconic Tony Award-winning original. Annie has a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin. All three authors received 1977 Tony Awards for their work. Choreography for the show is by Liza Gennaro, who has incorporated selections from her father Peter Gennaro’s 1977 Tony Award-winning choreography.
The beloved score includes “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “Easy Street,” and the eternal anthem of optimism, “Tomorrow.”
